Hey everyone
« on: July 16, 2018, 12:08:33 AM »
Hello everyone.
Eric from Huntington here. Not so sad to say I’m afflicted with audiophilitis, but I’m a total noob when it comes to two channel variety of the disease. I’ve played in bands, guitar most of my life, telecasters, a deluxe reverb and a tube screamer is all it takes! ... anyhoo I’m a tone junkie building a stereo rig and I’ve got lots of questions! I’d rather hear detail than throw barbells around the room and so I recently bought a decware zen torii mk4. I’m currently using monitor audio silver 6’s but have a pair of Zu omens on order. Looking for advice on a good preamp to add weight to the sound. Currently I’m running tidal into a schiit modi multibit, mimby, through a schiit vali 2 into the amp. I know it’s not ideal but it’s what I’ve got and I have to say pushing the tori with some gain is definitely wonderful. I also just ordered a turntable, a music hall mmf 7.3 with a sumiko bluepoint cartridge as  I must say digital has been great for convenience but now life’s circumstances have allowed me to spin the black circle again and to me there is NOTHING better. I’m looking forward to listening for more than 45 minutes which is about my limit for streaming with didgital. I’d love to get some advice for better ones and zeroes though, as I haven’t been exposed to much more that the audioquest dragonfly red and black, schiit modi multibit, and odac, which to me, was the most musical of the bunch but lacked in the detail that I so love.
Cheers lads and ladies!
Good to be here.

Ps
I listen all over the place.

Yo Eric!

Thin tone usually due to too small woofer for the room size. Omens are 10" while Monitors are only 6" so you should notice an improvement (after break in.)

A tube preamp that uses 6SN7 tubes will thicken the gravy a little, but not enough to correct a small woofer. Like Cary SLP98, or tubes4hifi SP14, or DeHavilland UltraVerve.

I heard a Topping DAC ($250 ebay) a couple weeks ago, it was very impressive, compared well to 2k-5k DACs. A little bit flabby bass, but otherwise good rich refined sound.
Rich

edit: It was a Topping DX7s $500

There is a Huntington in NY, WV and IN that I know of. Any others?
We could make a good game out of it "Wheres Eric". He could give us little hints.

Hello Eric and welcome. I’m a two channel only kinda guy. Tweaking your system sure sounds like fun. Rich mentioned a dac I hadn’t heard of and that might be a very good choice. I just bought a very detailed, organic sounding Border Patrol SE dac used...from a member here.... for $1,000. I’m very happy with that purchase.
Do you have an overall budget or a budget for each piece or......?
