One of the things I love is...
« on: January 08, 2018, 09:15:01 PM »
Visiting with Cal Perkins when we go up to Portland.  He is a friend of ours through daughter Heather's church in Cedar Mill.

Cal is truly a legend that has impacted most of our lives.  As a JBL employee for many years he designed cabinets and drivers used by most sound companies in the late 60s and 70s.  He designed the Eagles touring systems as well Tom Petty and others.  While at Mackie he designed the 1800 series with a calculator, pencil and paper during a big server crash when all of the CAD guys drank coffee.  He is the designer of the Perkins EQ that was a new direction in recording console EQ, much like the Rupert Neve EQs were some years before.

In addition, Cal is a wonderful man and brilliant conversationalist.  Enjoy

He is an unsung hero!

This just proves what I've been thinking about you Dave.
Your a nerd.
Interesting video though. I think it's great when someone makes a living
(and legacy) through their passions. I think the Experts Corner is a local
place for us here to see more of this. I am amazed at the knowledge and
history we have here. Can't imagine a conversation between Cal and you.

Imagine this: when we get together it is a total geekfest and I just kind of sit there in awe.  He is really funny with a bunch of "inside pro audio" comments about the industry and how major corporations changed it.  Sidney Harman changed the industry forever and not in a particularly good way. He is incredibly active in his retirement. He designed a custom array for Cedar Mill Church that they were getting ready to hang when we left.  His attention to detail is amazing.

Another reason I like the man is he hates titanium diaphragms as much as I do.  He calls it ticrappyium.

Looking forward to our next trip :) up there.
