10" Tablet recommendations needed
« on: June 10, 2012, 07:00:14 AM »
Does anyone know of a cheap 10" tablet that looks pretty good, works reliably and is cheap?  I'm only looking for it to be a remote desktop/controller for my audio PC.  I'm tired of having my monitor and keyboard occupy a seat in my sound room.

It's only uses will be to remotely connect to another PC via wireless.  It won't leave the sound room.  Durability and reliability are my only real 'requirements'.

I'd like something under $200... (less is better of course).

Thanks,
Carl

Thanks, Rich.  It's tough to narrow down search results since they don't allow me to pick the omission of things.  Like non-GPS... and the sizes are all off by .1 inches... so a 9.7, 10, 10.1, etc.. you can't do a search on size either.  I get tons of 7" screens which are too small...

Just curious if anyone has any experience with a sub-200 tablet that has a good screen and wifi... and that isn't super fragile.

Thanks,
Carl

I found some deals on a "Toshiba Thrive" used on Craigslist...
Looks like I can get one for about 250.

The other option is to get a used laptop.. $50, less sexy, though.

I'm looking for a remote desktop touch screen that's compact.  The modern tablets are way overkill for what I need but it appears you have to get all the bells and whistles to get a nice screen.... and with my aging audio buddies, big and clear is important at our G2G's. ;)

There are some good options mentioned in this article. Also check the comment bickering at the end for more ideas.

I've started a search for a "Ultrabook" for my wife's birthday. Not a tablet, per say, but most of them use Windows 8 and hava touch screen interface and a keyboard. I'm not fond of the solid state drive options - not large enough. I think my leading candidate is an Acer M5-481PT with a 13" touchscreen, 500MB hard drive, W8, good keyboard, size and weight appropriate for her needs (Word, Excel, e-mail, internet, no gaming).

iPad...

Uggh. Overpriced and under powered and too many hoops to jump through to run the Windows related apps that we already own and want to use. Not a fan.

While the original request is about 10" tablets... I have to say... I'm really liking the iPad mini (I have a iPad 2 as well). Wait till Monday to see if anything is coming down the pipe from Cupertino.

I like iPad too, dj. My wife bought me a Samsung galaxy for Xmas and it is pretty nice. It's not intuitive like apple products but it works nicely for me.

Get an Android OS so you can avoid iTunes app censorship.
