When is "sounds right", right... not correct, but right?

Good question Dave.
When you just feel good listening.
(and when really high notes played loud on a trumpet don't hurt).

I think Don nailed it.  When you aren't worrying about speaker position, your diminished hearing,  balance, moving this or that about... but  instead you're just enjoying the music, good or bad.  That's when things are right, both system and attitude wise.

Just get the piano and violin right and all else will follow suit.

It is right when one stops analyzing the sound and the sound pulls them in and you forget the analysis. Or when my Daughter says "Dad what did you do ? sounds great" I nicknamed Her "Ears".

That's Gayle.  she know what she likes and doesn't and the woman can hear !  It is cool that she knows none of the audio nervosa jargon and explains what she hears in "real terms", too.

I think this is a slippery slope.   Sometimes "different" seems right... at least at first... because different causes our ears/brains to critically listen again.   I know I've been tricked by that more than a few times.

Here's a good example - I recently sent in my Devialet Expert integrateds for an upgrade (free, but that's another story).   At the risk of being without music for a few weeks, I hooked up my primary speakers to my Sherwood HT receiver and pulled out an old Squeezebox Touch to stream Roon to it.  I was expecting it to sound like crap.   But it didn't.  In fact, I was really enjoying what I was hearing and it has taken a few days to now notice what is missing - well defined bass, extended highs, rich and deep sound stage.   But that didn't change the fact that at least for a few days, I was really enjoying cheap HiFi.
