Title: Outdoor Speaker Recommendation Needed
Post by: Bigfish8 on June 18, 2008, 05:05:37 PM
Guys:

I have a very old pair of Boston Voyager Speakers on the porch at my place on the Eastern Shore and they need replacing.  The woofer in one of the speakers rattles like crazy whenever low bass notes are played.  What do you recommend that is reasonable priced and puts out decent sound while sitting on the porch enjoying an adult beverage?

Thanks,

Ken

I have heard good things about the Axiom Algonquin's.

Being a PSB dealer, I'm fairly sure they make something also but I have yet to hear them.

You want cheap and good?  I did.
I used to recommend outdoorspeakerdepot.com... and have found they're hit and miss... both in quality and service... and they filter all negative reviews on their products.  You can get a good pair of speakers there, though.. but I found most of them sound their best at higher volumes.

My most recent purchase was a $100 pair from outdoorspeakerstore.net.  I could not be more pleased with the size and sound quality I'm getting.  Honestly, I'd put them a big notch ahead of anything I've heard under $300.... and in the same ballpark as $400+ speakers.
These are the ones I bought. (http://outdoorspeakerstore.net/PAAW525_Pro_Audio_125W_Patio_Speakers_Pair_p_16226.html)

I tried buying the one larger, the 6.5"... but those only came in black.  The 'white' is really an off-white or 'cream' which matches our house's trim perfectly.... which is good because they're mounted under the eave.  I was worried about the smaller woofer having no bass but it's fine.  And these sound good at all volume levels.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these to anyone.

I'm running about 50' of speaker cable for this pair from a cheapie integrated and haven't had any issues so far.

If you want something today, the Polk's at Circuit City are pretty good also but I like the ones I have better.

Hi Carl:

Thanks for the recommendation for outdoor speaker depot.  I ordered a pair on Monday and received them today and look forward to connecting them on the Eastern Shore next week.

Ken, if you bought the same ones I did (from the OutdoorspeakerStore.net, not depot) I have no doubt you'll be pleased.  I'm going to the shore in a week also... Hope we have good weather!

I was going to look at those as well until I figured I could use the entire crawlspace as a bass reflex enclosure and mount the speakers the way I did. For free, they sound pretty good  :-P

Nick's concept is pretty cool... I've witnessed it in action and it works great. Just put speakers under the house pointing out of the crawlspace vents. Completely invisible!  8)  And I think your speaker choices are pretty much wide open.  Is that an infinite baffle you're using, Nick? ;)

I'd consider the same thing if I had a crawlspace...
