Title: Streaming Service and Patricia Barber Albums
Post by: shadowlight on July 25, 2018, 07:35:30 PM
Has anyone else noticed majority of Patricia Barber's album are missing from various streaming services?  I do not see Cafe Blue, A Fortnight in France, Modern Cool listed.

Spotify: Cole Porter Mix, A Distortion of Love, Mythologies, Smash, River
Deezer: A Distortion of Love, Cole Porter Mix, Smash, Monday Night - Live at the Green Mill Vol. 2, Mythologies, Monday Night, River

I am kind of surprised that her albums are missing.  If you have Tidal, Qobuz or any other services can you list her albums that are available for streaming.

This is one of the main reasons I still buy music... I don't want to rely on a streaming service that may or may not have an album I really want in my collection.   Patricia Barber is high on that list for me - I've seen here numerous times in Chicago @ The Green Mill.

Anyone have any experience with Qobuz (yet)?   Rumor has it that it's coming to the US and they're working with Roon to get it integrated.   TIme will tell...

Like mdconnelly said. Buy the CDs that you really enjoy.

Tmazz had instances  where some of his favorites were completely removed....gone.

For me, Tidal deleted all the songs in "my favorites" folder.

Life is tough

Congrats on your 1001st post, Emil.  :thumb:

I don't like Patricia Barber, but I sure can appreciate when music goes missing. Music is personal and we rely on these streaming services to serve all of our music. It would be great to have a competitor to Tidal for streaming full rez files.   Doesn't make sense that her music disappeared from Spotify, unless she decided she wants to get paid instead of giving it all away for free. Rather sell 1000 CDs a year than get nothing. Or maybe it is a technical problem that will be resolved.  Probably worth letting them know about it, just in case, if that's possible?

Yep, I have majority of the albums but I was trying out a new way to stream Deezer HiFi using Chromecast to HQPlayer to DAC and figured I would use her Cafe Blue album and to my surprise it was not available.  So checked Spotify and same thing  :duh

I have seen it happen with a number of artists where they only release a limited number of their albums to the streaming services and even some times where a given album only has a subset of it's songs available for streaming and the rest are greyed out and cannot be selected.

I suspect this is more the doing of the record companies than the artists and the record companies have not yet wrapped their heads around how to monetize music via streaming, so they are just using the streaming services to try to drive further sales of the physical media they are used to dealing with. By only streaming a subset of the albums or songs on a given album they are holding back "the good stuff" in hopes of inticing a listener into buying the records or CDs.

Unfortunately history tells us that strategies like this are ultimately doomed to failure and the companies that will survive in the long run are the ones that welcome the change and reinvent themselves rather that hanging on to the old ways  and trying to milk the last possible pennies out of the old ways. The business literature is full of examples of this phenomenon. (The change from bias ply to radial tires, the delivery of freight by motor truck rather than railroads, the changeover of ocean liners from basic transportation to vacations in and of themselves, etc.)
