Gearsomniac
« on: February 23, 2012, 11:22:33 AM »
Just got an e-mail from Tito (remember Tito from the original NY Audio Rave?). He's built a site called Gearsomniac which is about social networking. Please feel free to check it out and join. Here's his e-mail about a new feature that may be of interest.

************
Hi guys,
If you're like me and haven't been happy with Audiogon recently, I'd like to invite you to check out our "next generation" classifieds board-- Gearsomniac Bazaar:
http://www.gearsomniac.com/bazaar

The bazaar includes some of features typical of classified boards:

upload up to 3 pictures which you can extend by embedding HTML <img src="..."> to external galleriesembed videossearch by title / description / item location / zip / partial zipquick renewing of ads (expiration currently set to 30 days, can be changed)regular ads are free ($2 for featured -- bumps ads up the page) - note: the only difference between regular / featured is placement on the list Features unique to Gearsomniac Bazaar (you have to a member):

since we're using a social network as a platform, every time an ad is posted it also gets automatically announced in your profile activity stream. See the Gearsomniac home page for an example of an auto-announced listing (RPG Variscreen):
http://www.gearsomniac.com/when logged-in and viewing an ad, instead of relying on the seller's "sales feedback" we show you your relation to the seller and if you have any mutual friends, who those friends are. This feature shall allow you to easily spot trolls/scammers because chances are they won't have any friends!your classified ads shall also be shown in your profile (coming very soon).

If you'd like to try it out, please feel free to post test ads, just bear in mind that we encourage a "real name culture" and believe this significantly improves online interaction. We also have a discussion board for feature requests and issues and promise to listen to your needs. Please feel free to get in touch with me directly via email if you have any questions.
Thanks and best regards!
Tito

Yes, I got same from Tito.  I'm just around the corner from his hiding place, so we'll have lunch sometime.  You guys coming?

Also, just for the convenience, I found out today that In Living Stereo has moved, since about 4 months ago, I was told by someone at the shop.  It's at about the same location one street south of the old one.  See the business card here:

Hello Guys!!

I just found out about this thread today as I lurk here from time to time. Btw, thanks BobM for posting about the subject and for some of you joining.

First off, I'd like to make sure I'm not stepping on any toes... so moderators, if you feel for any reason that this post is inappropriate, please delete it and I'll respect your decision.

Regarding the Gearsomniac Bazaar, no disrespect to Agon, but coming up with a classifieds board is straightforward and easy. To differentiate ourselves, however, we wanted Gearsomniac to fully integrate classified ad listings with our social network platform.

For example, as soon as you list an ad, immediately it becomes visible to everyone in the global "activity" list:

Then, if you're viewing an ad (while logged in), you're shown your relationship to the seller. Personally, I think the "sales feedback" metric while helpful, isn't quite as revealing as knowing whether you and the seller have "mutual friends."

Your profile page also contains listings of your ads. Friends and visitors who view your profile will immediately know what you're selling.

And just recently, I've built-in hooks into Facebook such that if you sign-in or associate your Facebook account as a new user or existing user--

posting an ad will also update your Facebook status page:

Finally, since we're not out to build a site that relies on classified ad revenue, you can be assured (regular) ads will always be free!

Thanks for reading,
Tito

PS. Shek, sorry, I hadn't had a chance to arrange for lunch with BobM since we're all in the same neighborhood during the day but if you guys are free tomorrow... if not, next week?

 Hey Tito,

I've been checking Gearsomniac here and there, and didn't see any "action", so I thought you were busy.  Tomorrow's OK by me, if you and BobM are go.  I thought I was going to have to post over there.  But.... decided to do it here.

Perhaps today is too short notice for lunch, Shek, let's plan on next week instead.
